The next four weeks marks what must be one of the most dynamic periods ever in Toronto tango. Starting tonight we have the biggest annual influx of tango aficionados to three plus days of intensive activity with the 8th Toronto Tango Festival organised by Elizabeth Sadowska of the Rhythm&Motion dance studio. The June 29 – July 1 long weekend offers both the new Milongueando Toronto event by Bryant & Faye of TangoSoul and the second year of DNI workshops at City Dance Corps. And then on July 6 (Argentina’s Independence Day) Roxana & Fabian of Tango de Oro have now announced an exciting line-up for their annual Toronto Tango Summit including a rare opportunity to dance to a live tango orchestra!
This incredible range of tango activities is a testament to the energy and risk taking of our organisers able to rely on the support of our dancers to attend all these events. And nobody can say we don’t dance through the night in Toronto – there will be two milongas ending at 5 a.m. during the Festival (June 7 – 10) and several ending at 4 a.m. during Milongueando (June 29 – July 1).
Note that many of the regular milongas are cancelled during the Festival which may cause disruptions later in the month, for example El Toro is cancelled for June and Tango Tea will change its weekend. La Central, which is usually held on the third Friday of the month, has moved to June 29.
We all have those friends who insist they want to learn tango – make sure you let them know about the Absolute Beginners Intensive Workshop which takes place for three hours on June 9 and June 10 – a regular feature of the Toronto Tango Festival.
All these special soirees put the wardrobe planning department of the tanguera’s mind into high alert. If you need more shoes (did anyone ever not need more shoes?), Elizabeth has just received a new shipment of Comme Il Fauts which can be purchased online or at Saturday’s Grand Ball Milonga. See you there!
